Nestled in the rolling countryside of rural Virginia, Mullet Black Angus is a family-owned and operated farm rooted deeply in American history. The land has been in the Howell family since the 1700s, passed down through generations of farmers dedicated to hard work and honest living. While the family’s cattle operations paused in the 1960s due to the health of Chris Howell’s grandfather, the farming spirit never left. Chris’s father continued working the land into the 1990s, keeping the family-farming connection alive.
Though Chris became an electrician by trade, his heart remained on the farm where he was raised. His dream was to one day return to his roots and revive the tradition of raising Black Angus cattle. Initially, his wife Amy wasn’t sure farm life was for her—but over time, her heart changed. She began to embrace the rhythms of rural living, learning the skills and values that define life on the land.
With guidance from a neighbor and mentor whose family had long raised Black Angus, Chris and Amy immersed themselves in the knowledge and practices needed to care for the herd. In 2017, they made the leap—moving to the farm, restoring Chris’s great-grandparents’ home, and officially bringing Mullet Black Angus to life.
Today, the care Chris gives his cattle is unmatched. He maintains lush pastures of millet and rye and nurtures a strong bond with his animals—many of whom come running at the sight of his white bucket filled with sweet feed. It’s not uncommon to find Chris in the pasture, quietly observing his herd or offering a gentle scratch under the chin to a curious steer or heifer.
Our cattle are pasture-raised on fields of millet and rye, with care and attention that goes beyond industry standards. They’re never given hormone injections or antibiotics, and they live as they were meant to—grazing freely and thriving on nutrient-rich land. This means our beef is not only more natural, but also healthier, cleaner, and better-tasting than conventional options.
